Dance Major Requirements

Prerequisites (8-9 units)

Dance 203: Composition I (3 units)
2-3 dance courses or advanced placement in dance (2-3 units)
Drama/Dance 212E: Introduction to Theatre Production (3 units)

Required Courses (18 units)

Dance 213: Improvisation I (1 unit) OR Dance 310: Improvisation II (1 unit)
Dance 303: Composition II (3 units)
Dance 305Z: Music Resources for Dance (2 units) OR Dance 312: Accompaniment Techniques for Dance (2 units)

6 units from Dance 301, 302, 321, 3221, 401, 402, 415, 416, 4281, 4291

Choose 6 units from among the following:
Dance 315E: Dance Spectrum (3 units)
Dance 316E: From Romantic to Postmodern Dance (course can be taken as an elective if not taken in fulfillment of a requirement) (3 units)
Dance 340: Ballet as Ethnic Dance and Classical Art (3 units)
Dance 342: Critical Thinking in Western Theatrical Dance (3 units)

Total number of units required: 35-36

The dance major must take at least one upper level course in both ballet and modern dance technique and theory. At least one of the following courses is strongly recommended: West African Dance, Classical Indian Dance, Dunham Technique, Musical Theatre Dance, Jazz Dance.
